For this week we start off by paying tribute to the great SUGAR MINOTT who passed on recently at the age of 54. SUGAR MINOTT was one of Jamaica’s most versatile singers and instrumental in developing what we now call Dancehall Reggae music.

Following is a showcase of SKREAM’s latest Freeizm release, announced earlier in the day. Volume 3 contains more classic SKREAM material from past years, many of them extremely hot dubplates in their time. FYI the Freeizm series is yet another example of SKREAM’s generosity toward his fans, with all these releases free to download straight from the man himself. Be sure to return the favor and buy SKREAM’s album, Outside the Box, dropping August 9 and available for pre-order now. Three physical formats will be available: CD, Deluxe CD, box set vinyl.

BREAKS OF DAWN rounds out the show with her blend of DnB from Canada and beyond.

Click here for the show (external link)

In 2006, Mary Anne Hobbs smacked the world with the sound of a handful of closely knit friends from South London. Arguably this was just a snapshot in time of a sound that had already been spreading and was continuing to infect fans of heavy music across the globe. But this broadcast surely had an accelerating effect, putting the sound to the chests of many many more including UBU Sound.

This was and is a grassroots movement; kids getting creative to move people. But before they could say bassface, these same kids were flying to all corners of the world and playing to larger and larger audiences. All the while, you could get personal dubplate sessions and commentary on rinse fm radio shows, which many of these guys still hold down.

This recording sets the tone of dubstep at what was a pivotal point in the music, just after this branch of dance music was officially named. Incidentally, at this point some were resentful about boxing the music into a genre and some still are.

For those that have found dubstep through mainstream drum and bass, or if dubstep hurts your ears, this is your ticket. Fans of: jungle, techno, dub, heavy metal, or ambient will appreciate.
